Public Holidays

This year will see the addition of a new permanent public holiday established in the Republic of Ireland in celebration of St Brigid’s Day.  This new annual public holiday will be the first Monday in February, except where 1st February is a Friday, in which case that Friday will be a public holiday.

Public Holidays

The 10 Public Holidays for 2023 are:

  • New Year’s Day – 2nd  January (in lieu of 1st)
  • St. Brigid’s Day – 6th  February
  • St. Patrick’s Day – 17th March
  • Easter Monday – 10th April
  • May Bank Holiday – 1st May
  • June Bank Holiday – 5th June
  • August Bank Holiday– 7th August
  • October Bank Holiday – 30th October
  • Christmas Day – 25th December
  • Stephen’s Day – 26th December

 

How this public holiday Impacts Employers

It is vital that employers are aware of their obligations in this area. You may be surprised to hear that this is one area where many employers actually overpay employees as they do not fully understand the legislation.

In summary, Full Time Employees who are normally scheduled to work are entitled to their employers’ choice of the one of the benefits below in respect to a Public Holiday. While Part Time/Casual Employees who are normally scheduled to work on a public holiday are entitled to one of the benefits below on the condition that they have worked 40 hours in the previous 5 weeks:

  • A paid day off on that day
  • A paid day off within a month of that day
  • An additional day of annual leave
  • An additional day’s pay

Full Time Employees who are not normally scheduled to work are entitled to 1/5th of a public holiday benefit.

Part-Time employees who are not normally scheduled to work are entitled to 1/5th their average weekly earnings over the previous 13 weeks worked if they meet the qualifying entitlement criteria.
