UK payroll compliance updates today – check if you’re paying/being paid correctly
The UK’s national minimum wage and national living wage increase has come into effect today. The new hourly rate for the minimum wage still depends on age and whether you’re an apprentice or not. You must also be at least school leaving age to get the national minimum wage (the school leaving age depends on where a person in the UK lives, click here to find the varying UK school leaving ages). People 25 and over get the national living wage while the minimum wage applies to workers aged 24 and under. The new rates for the UK national minimum wage and national living wage are as follows:
The following table shows the previous UK national living wage and the national minimum wage:
Apprentices are entitled to the apprentice rate if they’re either:
- aged under 19
- aged 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship
For example, an apprentice aged 22 in the first year of their apprenticeship is entitled to a minimum hourly rate of £3.40
Apprentices are entitled to the minimum wage for their age if they both:
- are aged 19 or over
- have completed the first year of their apprenticeship
For example, an apprentice aged 22 who has completed the first year of their apprenticeship is entitled to a minimum hourly rate of £6.95
It doesn’t matter how small an employer is, they still have to pay the correct minimum wage. Use www.gov.uk’s minimum wage calculator to check if the correct minimum wage has been paid.
Workers can check if:
- they’re getting the correct minimum wage
- an employer owes them payments from past jobs
